Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois represented in the General Assembly, That the executor, administrator[,] or legal representatives of Samuel Jackson, deceased, late of the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, be, and they are hereby authorized and required to expend any sum of money not exceeding
five hundred dollars belonging to the estate of the said deceased, in purchasing Congress land for the use of the widow and children of said deceased, in order to secure them a home.

1On January 17, 1840, Gholson Kercheval in the House of Representatives presented the petition of citizens of McHenry County, which the House referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. In response to this
petition, Josiah Fisk of the Committee on the Judiciary introduced HB 227 in the House on January 22.
The House passed the bill on January 30. The House informed the Senate of the bill’s passage, but the latter took no action.
