An act To protect the Lands owned by the state of Illinois

Sectn[Section] 1st Be it Enacted by the people of the State of Illinois Represented in General Assembly That any person or persons who shall cut, Box[,] fell[,] bore[,] or carry away any tree or sapling standing or growing upon the Lands owned or hereafter to be entered[,] purchased[,] or owned by the State of Illinois shall forfeit & pay for such Tree or sapling so cut[,] felled[,] Boxed[,] boared[,] or destroyed the sum of Eight Dollars
Sect 2 If any person shall after this act take effect purchase[,] recieve[,] or use any Tree[,] sapling[,] or Timber or wood of any description which shall have been taken off [,]of[,]or from any of the Lands now owned or hereafter to beloning to the state such person shall be liable to pay at the rate of Twenty Dollars for every such Tree or sapling and one Dollar pr[per] foot for every foot of Timber and Ten Dollars pr cord for wood to be recovered in any action of assumsit or debt in the name of the state of Illinois, before any Justice of the Peace or Circuit Court having jurisdiction of this [...?]
Sect 3 If any person shall open any Quarries or Banks of Stone, Coal

or either, upon the Lands mentioned in the forgoing section and take Stone or Coal therefrom each & every person or persons shall be liable to pay a[t] the rate of Fifty Cents for each & every perch of stone and Fifteen cents for each & every bushel of coal so taken or quarried to be recovered as aforesaid
Sect 4 It shall be the duty of every cons Sheriff[,] Constable[,] Commissioner[,] Engineer[,] Grand & Pettit Jurors to give information to the proper authorities for all & every Violation of this act
Sect 5 If any sheriff or other officer shall fail to execute and return any process issued under the provisions of this act He shall be liable to be proceeded against by attachment and no rule to show cause shall be necessary to authorize the issuing of any such attachment, but the same shall be issued on the application the of any writ and be returned as early as practicable and unless the Sheriff or other officer can Show a legal excuse for the failure to execute or return the process he shall be liable to be fined in any Sum not exceeding Five Hundred Dollars and pay all costs of the proceedings

against him. he shall, moreover be liable to an action upon his bond for damages, as for other violations or neglect of duty.
Sectn 6 Justices of the Peace shall have Jurisdiction where the sum claimed shall not exceede one Hundred Dollars in all cases under the provisions of this act.
