To the Hon Senate & House of Representatives of the United States.
Your Petitioner William R Thompson of Ann Arbor Washtenaw County & State of Michigan humbly shows unto your honorable bodies That on the 27th day of October AD 1835 he made a contract with Hon Amos Kendall then Postmaster General to carry the United States mail for the term of four years from the first day of
January AD 1836 from Detroit to Marshall a distance of 113 miles Tri-weekly & received therefor the sum of
$11798..
$449.50 quarterly as per said contract no 1703. that said route soon after its commencement
was run daily by four horse post coaches instead of tri-weekly as per the said contract.
for the first two years from Detroit to Marshall & the last two years from Ann Arbor to Marshall. & in addition to said route he was compelled by said P.M. General to run a stage & carry the mail Tri weekly from Ann Arbor to Dexter & back & supply the post office at Scio village which places were directly off from route 1703. that during the time he run said
route & particularly in the year 1837 his expenses were much more than his receipts
being oblige to add to his teams & coaches to run the route daily. & paying high for
feed & as high as $1.50. to $2.00 per bushels for oats &c. & that during the four years he suffered a great loss in running said
routes daily instead of tri-weekly & in consequence of the contracts being let at
so low a rate & by being obliged to run to Dexter a place not intended to be embraced in the contract situate six miles off from route
1703. & which has always been

let as a seperate contract since.
And he prays that your honorable bodies may take the matter into consideration and
grant to him such allowance as the nature of the case may admit & as equity & good
conscience require
And your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray &c.
