To the Congress of the United States
We the undersigned Citizens of El’ Dorado and vicinity, of the State of Arkansas would
humble represent, that this country has been settled up for the last two years with
a very inteligent & industrious population, and yet the region of Country from this
point to Athens, the County seat of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, is deprived of mail
facilities. We therefore cordially join the Citizens of Louisiana, in petitioning
you to grant a mail rout to run from El’ Dorado, via Harper’s, Foster’s Store, and
James Dyer’s, to Athens La a distance of fifty four miles, establishing post-offices at Harpers, Foster’s, &
Dyer’s.
We would further represent, that all letters and papers from Nachitoches & Harrisonburg
would reach us much sooner, than they do by the present rout, which carries them from
Athens to Winden, thence to Washington in Hempstead Co, Arks, thence to Camden, thence to Champagnolle and from thence to El’ Dorado, a distance
of near two hundred miles, against the fifty four miles by the rout proposed above.
We, your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray & &c
