Union Tp Pike Co. O. Dec. 23d/'48.Honorable J. L. Taylor.
Herewith I send you the petition to establish a Mail Rout to our settlement from Piketon.
It was not at first intended that it should connect, any two other Routs, But the
conversation I had with you at Piketon and what you told me, induce me to make this
alteration; [...?] as follow; To start from the scioto Post-office scioto County Ohio, ^in the morning saturdays^ and to pass the New P. O. in[...?] the forenoon and reach Piketon at the time of day there designated (Noon) and then
to return the same evening, to the scioto P. O. as stated the said petition for 23d June '48.
You stated to us that the rout would be more likely to be established, if it connected
two routs. I have been requested, by many of the signers of said petition, to say
that they would prefer that the rout should connected scioto P. O. and Piketon P.
O., than, that it should only come to this settlement from Piketon. The proposition
in the petition was intend to make the rout as short as could be, to save expense to the department.
I, on inquiry, [...?] find, that the petitioners will be suited as well and most of them better to have
it extended. The distance will be about 18 miles between the two points, 36 both
ways
I here present you a plot of the count^r^y and roads (Post) &c.

1This sketch is not drawn to represent distance on the plot, nor the Proportion of
the Counties; but it is intended to give you some idea of the location of the country.
The valley is very thickly settled throughout its whole course; and this is a plan
that the dividing ridge of the Beaver creek, and of the Little scioto River is not
more than 15 or 20 feet above the level of the branches on each side. Forming an
^extensive^ vally though settled very thickly in every direction especially after we get East of the
Scioto River hills.
There is a weekly rout starts from Portsmouth and

goes directly to Scioto P. O and then South East, and returns past the Mouth of Little
scioto River. Send me an answer [&C.?] directed to scioto P. O.
