A bill for an act requiring County Treasurers to assess taxable property.

sec.[section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the General Assembly, That the Treasurers of the several Counties in this state shall hereafter assess the property subject to taxation in their respective counties.
sec. 2. Said Treasurers shall commence taking the list of taxable property on the first day of April in each year, or ^as^ soon thereafter as they shall receive from the clerks of the County Commissioners Courts the transcript of lands subject to taxation; and shall complete said list and make return thereof as now required by law, on or before the twentieth day of August in each and every year.
sec. 3. Said Treasurers shall arrange the names of all persons owning taxable property in alphabetical order, and shall not be required to list lands in numerical order.
sec. 4. The County Commissioners Courts shall allow County Treasurers for services rendered under this act such reasonable compensation as they shall deem just, not exceeding two dollars per day, for every day necessarily employed in the assessment of property.
sec. 5. All acts and parts of acts coming within the perview and meaning of this act, are hereby repealed.

1John M. Kelly introduced HB 256 in the House of Representatives on February 15, 1841. The House referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on February 22 with amendments, in which the House concurred. On February 24, the House referred the bill to the Committee on Finance, of which Abraham Lincoln was a member. The Committee on Finance did not report back the bill.
