An ACT to amend an act, entitled “An act to incorporate the town of Jacksonville, and for other purposes.”

Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the People of the State o f Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That so much of an act, entitled “An act to incorporate the town of Jacksonville, and for other purposes,” approved, February third, one thousand eight hundred and forty, as exempts the
corporation of the town of Jacksonville from paying a county tax on real estate, be, and the same is hereby repealed.
Incorporation may be dissolved.
Sec. 2. The legal voters of the corporate limits of the town of Jacksonville, shall have the right, at any annual election for town officers, to vote for or against continuing in force all laws and parts of laws incorporating
the town of Jacksonville, and if it shall appear that a majority of all the legal voters, are opposed to a
continuance of the act of incorporation, then the said act of incorporation shall
be null and void.2
Trustees, term of office
Sec. 3. (If) a majority of the voters shall decide in favor of annulling the charter in
compliance with the provisions of the foregoing section, then the present board of trustees of said town shall continue in office, and the act of incorporation shall continue in force, for
the sole purpose of raising taxes sufficient to pay the debts of the corporation.

1On January 5, 1841, William Sargent introduced SB 87 in the Senate. On January 12, the Senate amended the bill by adding Section 2. On January 14, the
Senate passed the bill. On January 21, the House of Representatives referred the bill to the Committee on the Judiciary, which reported it back with
an amendment on January 30. The House approved the amendment and passed the bill
the same day. On February 6, the Senate approved the amendment of the House. On February
17, the Council of Revision approved the bill and the act became law.
