Resolved, by the General assembly of the state of Illinois, that our senators in Congress be and they are hereby instructed, and our Representatives Requested, to use their influence, to effect a change in the constitution of the united states so that any president hereafter Ellected, shall not be Eligible to Reellection to the same office
Resolved further that the Governor Transmit a copy of the foregoing Resolution to Each one of our delagtes in Congress

1On February 6, 1841, William L. Sargeant introduced the resolution in the Senate. The Senate referred the resolution to the Committee on the Judiciary, which reported back on February 8, recommending the Senate to adopt the resolution. The Senate adopted it the same day. On February 13, the House of Representatives voted to refer the resolution to the Committee on Elections, by a vote of 43 ayes to 39 nays, Abraham Lincoln voting nay. The Committee on Elections reported back on February 26, recommending the House to pass the resolution. The House passed the resolution on February 26, by a vote of 57 ayes to 15 nays, Lincoln voting aye.
