JOINT RESOLUTION in relation to portraits of Washington and La Fayette

Duty of Gov.[Governor]
Resolved by the House of Representatives , (the Senate concurring herein,) That the Governor be, and he is hereby, authorized and requested to procure full length2 painted portraits (to be painted by an American artist) of the following named benefactors of mankind, to be suitably framed, and placed in the hall of the House of Representatives, when completed, viz: George Washington and Gen.3 La Fayette
1On February 22, 1839, Edward Smith introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives, and the House adopted it the same day. On February 25, the House reconsidered the vote. They amended it by striking out “life” and inserting “length” in lieu thereof, then adopted the resolution. On March 1, the Senate amended the resolution by striking out “Marquis De” and inserting “General” in lieu thereof. They then adopted the resolution as amended. On March 2, the House concurred in the amendments of the Senate.
