Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring herein, That a joint select committee of three on the part of the House, and two on the part of the Senate, be appointed to confer with the President and Directors of the Bank of the State of Illinois, and to ascertain whether, and upon what terms a loan can be obtained from said bank of a sum of money sufficient to pay the interest upon the internal improvement debt,
which shall become due on the first Monday in January next, and that they make report
of their proceedings herein without delay.
1Joseph Gillespie introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives on December 2, 1840, and the House adopted it, appointing Abraham Lincoln and two others to serve on the joint select committee. The House informed the Senate of the resolution’s passage, but the Senate took no action.
