Resolved, That the committee on Finance be instructed to inquire into the expediency of so
amending the revenue law as to authorize the sheriffs of the several counties to call
upon the tax-payers to meet them at the different places of holding elections for
justices of the peace and constables, for the purpose of receiving their tax, under
such conditions and restrictions as to said committee may seem just and equitable.
1John H. Murphy introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives on January 7, 1839, and the House adopted it. The Committee on Finance, on which
sat Abraham Lincoln, did not report back the resolution.
