In 1854, Samuel Blatchford, Clarence A. Seward, and Burr W. Griswold established the law firm of Blatchford, Seward & Griswold in New York City. Blatchford's father, Richard M. Blatchford, also consulted for the firm as needed. The firm became well-known and developed a strong reputation within both business and legal communities. It operated until after the Civil War.
