After the creation of Fayette County in 1821, the Fayette County Circuit Court became part of the Third Judicial Circuit. It remained in the Third Circuit until 1824, when the General Assembly moved it to the Second Judicial Circuit, where it remained for the remainder of Abraham Lincoln's life.
