Galena Jeffersonian

City: Galena

County: Jo Daviess

State: Illinois

The Galena Jeffersonian, founded by Horace A. and Henry W. Tenney in 1845, served as a Democratic newspaper for Galena, Illinois. Charles Sweeney purchased the paper in January 1847 and became editor and proprietor. In 1852, the Jeffersonian was purchased by Randall, Sanford & Company and in only a few months Dr. Charles H. Ray purchased Randall's share. After several subsequent changes in ownership, the newspaper ceased publication in 1855. Under the editorship of Ray, the Jeffersonian took a strong stand against the Kansas-Nebraska Act. When Ray left for the Chicago Tribune, the Jeffersonian returned to supporting Stephen A. Douglas and the Democratic Party.
