N. O. McKeen and John A. Whitlock established the Marshall Journal in the summer of 1858 as a pro-Republican organ. McKeen and Whitlock edited it together at first, then Whitlock served as its sole editor after McKeen retired. Dr. W. S. Goodell later purchased the paper and published and edited it as a politically independent organ. Publication ceased in the fall of 1859 when the paper was absorbed by the Eastern Illinoisan.
