Alexander H. Swain established The Monmouth Review in 1855 and served as the newspaper’s editor through 1886. The first issue was published on December 28, 1855. During Swain’s tenure, the newspaper was issued weekly. Swain was a Democratic leader in Warren County and a supporter of Stephen A. Douglas, and published The Monmouth Review as a Democratic Party organ.
