Schuyler Citizen

City: Rushville

County: Schuyler

State: Illinois

George W. Scripps founded the Schuyler Citizen, issuing the first edition on July 6, 1856. The weekly paper served as the organ of the Republican Party in Schuyler County, reflecting the beliefs of its many citizens that slavery should not spread throughout the nation. Scripps and the Citizen supported Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the 1858 Federal Election. Scripps continued as publisher and editor until 1865.
