In 1837, Allen moved to Springfield, where in 1846 he became the proprietor of the Globe Hotel. Allen was a politically active Whig who became a Republican upon the party's creation and helped to organize the party in Illinois. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Allen to the office of register of the federal land office at Yankton, Dakota Territory.
