William Arbuthnot was a postmaster, saddler, and sheriff. Little is known about his early life and education. Arbuthnot moved to Wabash County, Illinois, sometime before 1840. In June 1843, he received appointment as postmaster of Mount Carmel, a post he would hold until April 1849. In 1850, he was working as a saddler and owned real property valued at $200. By 1860, he owned real property valued at $1,500 and had a personal estate of $100. In December 1853, Arbuthnot became postmaster a second time, serving until October 1858. He became postmaster a third time in March 1860, serving until April 1861. Arbuthnot served as sheriff of Wabash County from 1862 to 1864.
