Armstrong served in the Revolutionary War as a volunteer from North Carolina. He became an early pioneer of the area that is now Menard County, Illinois. By 1820, he had settled in the Clary's Grove area, where he served as the first justice of the peace and was the first schoolteacher. His was married to Nancy Armstrong; they were the parents of Jack Armstrong, who was an acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln.
