Baker, James

Baker married Nancy Squires in Kentucky, and they had seven children born there before they moved with Baker's family to Illinois in 1828. James settled his family in a part of Sangamon County that would later become Christian County, where he established a farm, in addition to constructing a saw and gristmill on the North Fork of the Sangamon River. Baker also served as a constable, and in 1839 Christian County voters elected him as a justice of the peace. Politically, Baker was a Whig.
