Abraham Lincoln introduced the legislation that created Dane County in 1839. Commissioners appointed for the purpose chose a location for the county seat and named it Taylorville. In 1840, the Illinois General Assembly, responding to a petition from county citizens, changed the county's name from Dane to Christian.
