Batterton moved to Madison County, Illinois, with his parents in 1818. Two years later, he moved to Rock Creek. He married Nancy Yoakum, with whom he had eight children. Batterton earned the rank of 1st lieutenant in the Black Hawk War. After David's death in 1840, Nancy Batterton retained Abraham Lincoln to represent her in a case settling her husband's estate.
