Bakewell received a common-school education and served an apprenticeship with a printer. In 1833, he married Julia Ann Parshall, with whom he had six children. Bakewell worked as a farmer and hotel-keeper in Virginia before moving to Normal, Illinois, in 1845. He purchased 360 acres of land in McLean County and engaged in farming. In 1860, Bakewell owned real estate valued at $15,000 and personal property valued at $420. Politically, Bakewell was a Whig but remained independent after the dissolution of the Whig Party.
