The Illinois General Assembly created McLean County in 1830, out of the eastern part of Tazewell County and territory east of it. Originally much larger, land was taken away to form Livingston County in 1837, DeWitt County in 1839, and Woodford County in 1841. Bloomington has been the seat since the county's creation.
