The Illinois General Assembly created Livingston County in 1837 from parts of La Salle and McLean counties and unorganized territory. Commissioners appointed for the purpose chose a site for the new county's seat, which became the town of Pontiac. In 1839, county residents voted against removing the county seat from Pontiac.
