In 1833, Bennett migrated to Illinois with his mother and his five adult siblings. Bennett settled in Sangamon County and established a farm near Springfield. In 1843, he married Sarah A. Stevenson, and together they had three children. Bennett and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield. In 1860, Bennett owned $8,000 worth of real estate and $1,500 worth of personal property.
