Keeling lived in what would later become Cass County, Illinois, as early as 1830. In 1839 and 1840, he taught a subscription school near the village of Virginia. In 1842, he married Nancy S. Hopkins. In 1850, Keeling was farming in Cass County, and owned $1,100 worth of real estate. By 1860, Keeling and his family had relocated to Macon County, Illinois, where he continued farming and owned $800 worth of real estate.
