Bilyeu moved with his parents and siblings from Tennessee to western Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1829. In 1840, he married Elizabeth Workman in Sangamon County. Between 1850 and 1860, they moved to rural Christian County. In 1860, George was a farmer and he owned $2,500 worth of real estate and $1,850 worth of personal property.
