Anderson M. Blackburn was landowner, merchant, and banker. Son of Dr. Gideon Blackburn, a prominent Presbyterian minister and founder of Blackburn University in Carlinville, Anderson moved with his parents from Kentucky to Macoupin County, Illinois, in 1833. In 1835 and 1836, he purchased approximately 392 acres of public land southwest of Carlinville, near Chesterfield. In April 1838, he married Margaret Hoxsey in Madison County. Anderson and his wife later moved to Jerseyville, Illinois, where in 1850, Anderson was working as a merchant and owned real property valued at $1,000. By 1860, he had moved into banking and owned real property valued at $20,000 and had a personal estate of $20,000.
