In December 1836, President Andrew Jackson appointed Boyd receiver of public moneys at Columbus, Mississippi. Boyd resigned in the fall of 1837. In 1838, the U.S. government investigated Boyd and showed that he was liable for defalcations amounting to over $53,000.
