Buchanan moved from his native state to Morgan County, Illinois, in 1819 or 1820. In 1833, he married Barbara Duncan, with whom he had four children. In 1834, Buchanan and his family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling in Salisbury Township. Buchanan and his family relocated to Springfield in 1847, where he engaged in the grocery business. In 1860, he owned real estate valued at $2,000 and a personal estate of $6,000.
