Burt, Armistead

Burt moved with his parents from Edgefield County to Pendleton, South Carolina, where completed preparatory studies and later studied law. He earned admittance to the South Carolina bar in 1823 and started practicing in Pendleton. In 1828, he moved to Abbeville, where he continued to practice law and engaged in agricultural pursuits. Burt earned a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives, serving from 1834 to 1835 and again from 1838 to 1841. He won election, as a Democrat, to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1853. He served as speaker pro tempore of the House in 1848. Not a candidate for renomination in 1852, Burt returned to Abbeville and resumed practicing law.
