Campbell married Mary Griffith in Kanawha County in 1808, and four of their seven children were born in that county. In 1827, Campbell began purchasing public land in Sangamon County, Illinois, near Loami. Campbell and his family emigrated west, first to Cincinnati and next, around 1832, to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling on his land in Loami.
