Campbell lived in Sangamon County, Illinois, as early as 1831. During the Black Hawk War, he served in the Illinois Militia as a first lieutenant. Politically, he was a Democrat. He ran unsuccessfully for the Illinois House of Representatives in 1834; he died less than a month after the election.
