Cloyd settled in Sangamon County, Illinois, with his family in October 1825. He married America Clements on March 24, 1841, and the couple had two children, one of whom died in infancy. America died in 1847, and John married Sophia Lanterman on September 7, 1848. John and Sophia had eight children. Cloyd was a farmer in Curran, Illinois.
