Aletha R. Clem was a war widow. Born Aletha R. Crawford, she married Jessie R. Clem in Franklin County, Illinois, in March 1837. They remained married until Jessie Clem's death in October 1848 while serving with the Second Illinois Foot Volunteers during the Mexican War. In 1850, she was living in Franklin County with four children under the age of thirteen. By 1860, she was managing a farm southeast of Benton and owned real property valued at $150.
