From at least 1832 to 1835, Combs lived in a part of Sangamon County, Illinois, that would later become Menard County. In 1831, while living there, he married Rebecca Roser. By 1840, Combs had relocated his family to Washington County, Arkansas, where he served as a county judge in the 1840s and 1850s.
