An attorney, Colton served as the McLean County Probate Justice from 1839 to 1843. Later, he was the law partner of David Davis. When Davis was elected judge of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, Colton moved to St. Louis, where he was killed in the Great Fire of 1849.
