Colburn married Julia Smith in 1817 in Marietta, Ohio, where the couple had two children. In October 1822, Colburn and his family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling near extended family in which would become Loami Township. In 1823, Ebenezer purchased eighty acres of public land in the area. Ebenezer and Julia had five more children after moving to Sangamon County. In 1860, Ebenezer was working as a clerk and owned real estate valued at $100.
