After his birth, he moved with his family to Kentucky, where was raised. He married twice and had thirteen children. In 1829, he moved his family to Morgan County, Illinois. In 1840, he won election as a Whig to the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1850, he was farming in Morgan County, where he lived with his second wife Margaret and his large family.
