Cosner was living in Morgan County, Illinois in 1835, when he purchased federal land in part of the county that would later become Cass County. In 1837, he married Nancy Cownover in Morgan County, and they settled in Cass County, where Cosner was a farmer. In 1860, he owned $24,000 worth of real estate and $3,500 worth of personal property.
