Corneau married Virginia E. Reed in 1847 and was a merchant in Springfield. In 1849, he opened a dry goods store, Corneau & Irwin, on the public square. Corneau was a prominent Democrat and in 1860, was the treasurer of the Great Western Railroad Company. In 1860, he owned $1,000 worth of real estate.
