Davis and his family moved from Baltimore County, Maryland, first to Preble County, Ohio and later to Drake County, Ohio, before relocating to Sangamon County, Illinois, in February 1837. In 1850, Davis was farming in Sangamon County and owned real estate valued at $2,400. In 1860, he owned real property valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate of $1,200. In 1829, Davis married Elizabeth Davis, a widow, with whom he had seven children
