Dunlap, James

Dunlap contracted to build the Northern Cross Railroad from Meredosia to Jacksonville, and Jacksonville to Springfield, in 1838. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the School for the Deaf. In 1850, Dunlap was living in Jacksonville where he was farming and owned real estate valued at $150,000. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Dunlap volunteered for military service. In August 1861, he was commissioned as a captain and quartermaster of volunteers. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in January 1863, Dunlap resigned in June 1864. Dunlap was breveted colonel and brigadier general of volunteers for meritorious service in the field in March 1865.
