Elizabeth Todd was born into an aristocratic slaveholding family in Lexington, Kentucky. The elder sister of Mary Todd, Elizabeth married Ninian W. Edwards on February 16, 1832, in Lexington, Kentucky. After Ninian’s graduation from nearby Transylvania University, the couple moved to Kaskaskia, Illinois. They settled in Springfield, Illinois, in 1835. They had four children.
