Elkin's father, William F. Elkin, brought his family to Sangamon County, Illinois, in December 1825. In 1843, John G. Elkin married Eveline McNabb, and together they had four children. They initially settled in Springfield, where Elkin was employed as a clerk in 1850, but by 1860, he had established himself as a merchant in Mechanicsburg and he owned $2,500 worth of real estate. In 1856, Elkin was a member of the budding Republican Party .
