England married Susan Lewis on December 23, 1840, in Menard County, Illinois, where he lived before moving to Havana. Abraham Lincoln was England's attorney in a case in Menard County Circuit Court and in an appeal at the Illinois Supreme Court. In 1850, he was a farmer living in Mason County, where he owned $1,600 in real property. By 1860, he was making his living as a trader in Havana.
