England's father emigrated from Ohio to Illinois in 1819. In 1832, England lived in a part of Sangamon County, Illinois, that would later become Menard County. In 1833, England married Mahala Smith, and their union produced eight children, three of whom died in infancy. England was a farmer and in 1850 he owned over $4,000 worth of land.
