Ewing, John W.

As a youth, Ewing's family moved first to Kentucky and then in 1835 to Illinois. Ewing settled in Bloomington in 1840. Ewing, a Democrat, won election as Bloomington town trustee in 1848 and 1849. In 1850, he owned real estate worth $1,000. In 1854, Ewing was elected mayor of Bloomington, but declined reelection in 1855 due to failing health. Ewing was also one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, and was a ruling elder at the time of his death.
